Like any buildings, our hospitals and sites need repairs and regular maintenance. The fabric of the building needs to be looked after – walls, floors and windows – as well as the systems inside them – heating, power and ventilation.
What roles are available in Estates and what do they do?
Carpenter/joiner
- Repairing damage in and around the building
- Changing locks
- Fitting fire doors
- Making and assembling on a workbench
- Hanging shelves
- Working on roof timbers.
Electrician
- Planned maintenance
- Repairing equipment that is broken or faulty
- Testing equipment and systems
- Improvements and installations.
Painter and Decorator
- Removing old or damaged paintwork or wallpaper
- Repairing surfaces to be painted such as walls, window frames, fences etc
- Plastering small areas
- Estimating how much paint or wallpaper is needed
- Preparing surfaces
- Wallpapering and painting.
Plumber
- Planned maintenance
- Repairing equipment that is broken or faulty
- Testing equipment and systems
- Improvements and installations.
Estates staff working in the NHS are paid on the Agenda for Change pay system.
